INFORMATION

After a long reflection on the measure taken to suspend the issuance of residence certificates to new immigrants coming to our territory, the executive of the Parish Council decided to go back with this decision. This setback is due to the fact that this measure – which was intended to pressure the Government of Portugal to change its way of looking at the problems caused in the territory by the pressure of immigration without limitations, which have been revealed in the lack of capacity response of the various public services (in terms of health, security, and education), in the lack of housing for these immigrants and consequently also for the locals, in the social pressure caused by the overcrowding of housing, and at this moment in this closure of several economic activities following the measures of the state of emergency, because these people are not counted as inhabitants but only as positive cases of Covid 19 – it was penalizing mainly immigrants, who are the weakest link in the chain, who come to Portugal looking for a better life, just as the Portuguese have done throughout history.

What is needed for now, at this time of emergency and which we will continue to demand from the Government, are concrete measures to control this pandemic, such as the creation of housing centers for all positive cases of Covid 19, for all people who have not conditions of isolation in their homes, and also to ensure that cases of infection are isolated in a way that does not allow the spread of the pandemic in the territory. We also demand the reinforcement of the GNR so that the positive cases that are confined in their homes can be controlled.

Regarding the lack of conditions of public services and housing, we will continue to be part of the pressure groups that already exist in the County, to demand a different look that can lead to the improvement of living conditions in our land.
